Trump To Move Embassy To Jerusalem

Today, President Donald J. Trump will fulfill yet another of his campaign promises. This afternoon, President Trump will announce that the U.S. Embassy for Israel will be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The city which is holy to three of the world′s largest religious has been the capitol of the Israeli government for quite some time. In 1995, the U.S. Congress passed a bill approving the relocation of our embassy to Jerusalem. However, the bill included an option for a waiver, with which a President could delay the relocation due to national security reasons. Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama have all used this waiver, despite all three having promised to move the embassy during their own election campaigns. But, President Donald Trump, unlike traditional politicians, actually intends to keep his promise.

Naturally, there will be considerable angst over this decision. All 57 majority Muslim nations are opposed to us moving our embassy to Jerusalem. Yesterday, President Trump spoke with the leaders of some of our allies, including Jordan and Saudi Arabia, reassuring them that this move changes nothing. However, many of our embassies around the world are beefing up security, including deploying additional, Marine ′FAST′ units. These are quick response forces to assist in embassy security if needed.

Today′s decision does throw a monkey wrench in the last United Nations Security Council resolution orchestrated by the Barack Obama administration as they were leaving office. Even though Obama was a ′Lame Duck′, he chose to antagonize Israel by pushing a resolution declaring that the sacred site of the West Wall and the rest of Jerusalem ′occupied′ by Israel is against international law. That changed a major plank in our foreign policy, a move which ′Lame Duck; presidents have no business doing.

Not long after his reelection in 2012, Barack Obama had called for Israel to return to its pre-1967 borders. During the ′6 Day War′ in 1967, Israel defeated a combined Arab army of Jordan, Syria and Egypt, capturing a great deal of territory. Much of the Sinai Peninsula, the Golan Heights and Jerusalem were seized as a result of the Israeli victory. This came about after Israeli intelligence monitored troop build ups along the border as the joint Arab army was about to launch an attack. Israel launched a preemptive airstrike which destroyed the Arab air forces in a matter of hours. After that, the Arab ground forces were easily stopped and pushed back once they started their offensive.

Israel had moved its capitol to Jerusalem over 20 years ago. It is customary for the primary embassy to be located in a national capitol. Previous presidents have been reluctant to move our embassy to Jerusalem for a number of reasons. Aside from irritating the Muslim nations, such a move was seen as a potential obstacle to resolving the ′Two-State′, Palestinian homeland solution. But, after more than 20 years, more like 40 years since Jimmy Carter brokered a peace deal between Israel and Egypt, the ′Two State′ solution has yet to be achieved.

President Donald Trump has decided that now is the time to move our embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. This decision recognizes the reality that Israel will never give up Jerusalem, a city of major historical significance to them. When the United Nations approved the formation of a Jewish homeland 70 years ago, Jerusalem was intended to be an independent city-state under U.N. control. However, a combined Arab army attacked Israel immediately in 1947, capturing Jerusalem, and occupied it for 20 years. So, the question on who Jerusalem really belongs to is somewhat arbitrary. Obama′s call to restore the 1967 borders should have been to restore the 1947 original partition borders. But, as I said, the reality is that neither the 1967 nor the 1947 borders matter at this point. A new deal must be negotiated and President Donald Trump is just the man to get it done!
